Bring your lunch and find out “Who Put the ‘Pop’ in Pop Art!”
What is Pop Art and how did it come to be such a phenomenon in America and abroad after World War II? Bring your lunch and find out on Tuesday, July 8, when Spiva Center for the Arts launches its new lunchtime lecture series with “Who Put the ‘Pop’ in Pop Art?”

Spiva education assistant Meg Scearce Skaggs will offer the free slide lecture to coincide with the national touring exhibit, The Return of the Yellow Peril: A Survey of the work of Roger Shimomura, 1969–2007.

The exhibit includes paintings, prints, performance photographs, and found art sculptures by the distinguished former Professor of Art at KU. Surrounded by Shimomura’s work, participants will learn about the artist’s Pop Art style and discover the undeniable influence of his past in creating these unforgettable works of art.

Skaggs, who received her BFA at Savannah College of Art and Design, will discuss Pop Art’s European beginnings and the American Pop Art movement, including artists Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Jim Dine.

The Return of the Yellow Peril is a program of ExhibitsUSA with the Missouri Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Locally, the exhibit is presented by the Commerce Bancshares and William T. Kemper Foundations with additional funding from an anonymous Art Center Family and the Friends of St. Avips.
