George A. Spiva Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a workshop for children in grades 3 through 8. Ancient Egypt: Pottery and Sculpture is a program spanning three consecutive Saturdays in February and March, working primarily with clay.

Class sessions will be held February 21 and 28, and will conclude March 6. Children in grades 3 – 5 will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p.m., and children in grades 5 – 8 will meet from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Instructors are Anne Marie Gailey and Sam Lewis. Children will create animal sculptures, jars, pottery and tiles based on ancient Egyptian ceramics, and the program will conclude with a brief reception/exhibit of the students’ work.

“It’s really exciting to have Anne Marie and Sam as instructors for this program,” said Spiva director Jo Mueller. “They are very talented and the kids will enjoy working with them.” Last summer Spiva hosted a popular series of clay workshops for adults and children. “The clay classes very well received,” Mueller said. “There’s just something about kids and clay that makes for a really fun time.”

Cost for the three-week session is $45.00 per child. Pre-registration is required. Classes are limited to 20 students. A limited number of scholarships will be available.

Spiva Center for the Arts is located at 3rd and Wall in downtown Joplin. The galleries and gift shop are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The museum is open to the public, and although there is no charge for admission, donations are welcome.
