Spiva seeks entries for national competition
Entries for PhotoSpiva 2005, a national photography competition, are sought by George A. Spiva Center for the Arts.

The photo competition is open to any photographer in the United States or its territories.

“PhotoSpiva has the distinction of being the oldest continuous photographic competition in the United States,” Spiva director Jo Mueller reported in a news release.

PhotoSpiva is open to amateurs and professionals and it draws entries from around the nation. $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded and any photographic process is eligible. The deadline for entries is Feb. 7.

This year’s jurors are Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison. Their inventive and highly respected collaborative photographs are included in numerous collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, the Art Institute of Chicago and the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House.

The ParkeHarrisons will be in Joplin to judge entries the last week of February. They will give a lecture and slide show, “Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison: Art From Collaboration” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in Cornell Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University. Reservations for the lecture are recommended and admission is by donation.

PhotoSpiva 2005 will run in Spiva’s Main Gallery April 15 through May 20.
