Play with Polaroid techniques or learn to draw in Spring classes at Spiva Center for the Arts
"Currents" by Rhona Shand
This spring at Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, children and adults may explore alternative photographic techniques or may choose to take a class in beginning drawing.

Flyers with details and enrollment forms are available at the Center and at the Joplin Public Library. Students may register in person or by mail. Fees are due upon registration.

"Polaroid Creative Techniques” is an afternoon workshop for students Grade 9 through adult. According to instructor Rhona Shand, younger children may attend, but must be accompanied by an adult “shadow” to assist them.

Ms. Shand teaches photography and illustration at Pittsburg State University and oversees the education program at Spiva Center for the Arts.

“The interesting thing about the Polaroid techniques is that the processes allow you to ‘print’ or transfer photographic images onto all kinds of surfaces—wood, metal, ceramic, watercolor paper, etc. The results can be awesome!” Shand noted. Once the images have dried, color pencil, paint or collage techniques may be used to further enhance the image.

“Polaroid Creative Techniques” is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. The class fee is $50 ($45 for Spiva members). Materials are included. Students are encouraged to bring 35 mm slides which will be used to create images for transfer.

“Beginning Drawing with John Fitzgibbon” is scheduled for three days in May. The offering is designed for students with little or no experience.

The well-known artist and former Webb City art instructor has taught students worldwide. “This class grew out of last year’s watercolor classes at Spiva. Many of my students felt they wanted to get back to basics and really learn to draw.”

The class will focus on pencil drawing with emphasis in two areas: sketching and shading. High school freshmen through adult learners are invited to attend. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, May 12 – 14. Tuition is $120 ($108 for Spiva members). Supplies are included.

All classes take place at Spiva Center for the Arts, Third and Wall in downtown Joplin. Pre-registration is required; Enrollment fees are non-refundable telephone registrations are not accepted.
