Street scenes lit in neon, landscapes illuminated by lightning, the St. Louis Arch soaring into a night sky—rare glimpses of how things look after dark, and just as rare, the individual who works with long exposures during daylight hours, too.

Ryan Davis Flathau, Jr., Assistant Professor and Photography Facilities Technician at the University of Notre Dame is a master of both. He will be in Joplin this weekend to conduct a special two-afternoon and evening workshop at Spiva Center for the Arts.

Flathau’s Long Light Photography class is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22. Students will attend afternoon sessions from 2–5 p.m. and evening sessions from 6–9 p.m., learning techniques for long exposure photography under a variety of available light conditions.

“When you think about long light photography you automatically think of night photography. Fewer people consider using long exposures during the daytime because it’s so difficult to do,” said Rhona Shand, PSU photography instructor and Spiva education coordinator.

“Students in Ryan’s class will learn how to capture images with the limited light available at night, and how to limit light during long daytime exposures.” Participants can also expect to see a selection of Flathau’s work.

The class is limited to 15 students, high school freshmen through adults. All levels of experience are welcome. Participants should bring a single lens reflex (SLR) camera, traditional or digital, and for those with traditional cameras, 50 ISO and 400 ISO speed film.

Beginning students will come away with an immediate understanding of aperture and shutter speed; more advanced students will learn to apply the concepts to gain greater control over their images.

Class fees are $90 for Spiva members, $100 for non-members. Class schedules and enrollment forms are available at the Center and at the Joplin Public Library.

The Center asks that enrollment be made in person or by mail, with the tuition fees included.

Spiva Center for the Arts is located at Third and Wall in downtown Joplin. Gallery and gift shop hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
