Make a kaleidoscope, join the Junk Jam Band!
Spiva Center for the Arts announces an art-full summer schedule of classes for children and adults

This summer at Spiva Center for the Arts, children can make kaleidoscopes, work with clay, build wire sculptures, learn about photography, or play with papier maché. They can even create musical instruments and help form the SpivaKids Junk Jam Band.

High school and adult students can choose classes in photography, drawing and painting, or watercolor. In addition, classes in wearable art (jewelry making) and encaustsic painting methods (wax paintings fixed with heat) will be offered. An adult life drawing class is also scheduled for June.

“This is the most extensive line up of classes Spiva has ever offered. Classes start for students as young as four years old (‘Clay for Tots’) and progress through high school students and adults. We’ve pulled in instructors from four state schools and universities, so the quality of the classes should be outstanding,” Jo Mueller, Spiva director said.

A highlight of the summer will be the formation of the SpivaKids Junk Jam Band. Children in grades 3 through 8 will have a chance to create musical instruments from found objects, and “help establish what we hope will become an enduring tradition—a SpivaKids marching band that’s all about having fun!” Mueller added.

Flyers with details and enrollment forms are available at the Center, online at www.spivaarts.org or at the Joplin Public Library Reference Desk. The center asks that enrollment be made in person or by mail, with the tuition fee, rather than by phone. Some scholarships will be available.

Spiva Center for the Arts is located at Third and Wall in downtown Joplin. The center is funded through memberships, contributions and grants and is open to the public. Admission is by voluntary contribution. Gallery and gift shop hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m.
