Spiva Center for the Arts announces October Saturday classes for all ages
Autumn colors, dancing leaves, and Halloween! George A. Spiva Center for the Arts is offering three fun Saturday classes in October for students of all ages.

Just in time for Trick-or-Treat day, kids and adults of all ages can make papier maché Halloween decorations or masks in Wendy Milliman’s “Halloween Oooey Gooey Class”....IF YOU DARE!The class is held on Saturday, October 8 and 15, 1-4 p.m. Wear old clothes and a smile! The class is open to children and adults with a limit of 15 students. Tuition for Spiva members is $40, for nonmembers, $45, with all materials provided.

Discover the art and craft of the ancient Indonesian practice of batik. A perfect class for beginners, The Art of Batik, taught by Connie Knudtson, offers students the opportunity to learn basic techniques and explore color and materials applied to diverse fabrics. Students will need to bring natural fiber materials to dye, wear old clothes, and be ready to have an amazing time!

The Art of Batik will be held on Saturday, October 15 and 22, from 9 a.m. to Noon. The class is appropriate for students ages 13 through adult. Younger students ages 8–12 can attend with an “Adult Shadow.”

The class is limited to 15 students and requires the following supplies: Cotton, rayon, linen, ramie, and tencel are all cellulose fibers that work well with the dyes we will be using. Blends of these fibers with synthetics (such as poly/cotton) will not dye as well. Silk may be used but will have to be steamed to set the dye. Students can bring pieces of fabric or finished items such as pillow covers, t-shirts or other clothing to dye.

Tuition for Spiva members is $40 and $45 for nonmembers, with an additional supply fee of $5 to cover the costs of batik wax, fiber-reactive dyes, washable markers, brushes, and practice fabric.

Mosaics with Trish Courtney will hook you on making your own mosaic designs with glass, ceramic, stone, slate, shells, and found objects. Applied to lamps, stepping stones, terracotta plant pots, tabletops (even a chair!) the mosaic craft is easy to learn and can be taken to any level you want. Students will learn to create unique professional-looking mosaics that are colorful and fun to do!

The Mosaics class takes place from 1–4 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 and November 5 and is for students of any skill level who want to try decorating with mosaics. Tuition, which includes supplies, is $40 for Spiva members and $45 for nonmembers, with a class limit of 15.
