Spiva begins its November arts education offerings with two rescheduled workshops offered by photographer Eric Kunsman, Adjunct Professor of Art at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York. His visit to Joplin is provided by INNOVA Digital Art, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of digital photography and fine arts paper.
The Bookbinding Workshop with Eric Kunsman will be held at Spiva Center for the Arts from 5–10:30pm, Thursday, November 10. Students will learn two forms of traditional hardcover or “case” binding and create a bound book. The session will be held Thursday, November 10, 5pm–10:30 pm at Spiva. Tuition is $65 per person, with an additional $40 lab fee to cover the cost of materials. Class size is limited to 15 participants, and no experience is necessary. According to Spiva director Jo Mueller, the bookbinding class is for “anyone interested in handcrafting personalized books: artists, photographers, paper artisans, genealogy researchers, even scrapbookers. Imagine making—and learning to professionally bind—a beautiful book of your own images, writings or personal mementos. Whether you make it for yourself or as a gift, the possibilities are limitless!”
Pixel to the Bookshelf is a three-day workshop taught by Eric Kunsman, taking place at the Pittsburg State University Art Department in Porter Hall, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 11, 12, and 13. From digital files to a bound book, this workshop will take students through the entire process of designing, printing, and binding a book. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and digital printing basics, and should bring a minimum of 15 digital files which will go into the final book. Tuition is $270 per person. A $40 lab fee covers the cost of materials. Class size is limited to 8 students, with four additional slots available at a discount for college students possessing a current Student ID. Registration deadline is November 7.
The colorful art quilts currently on display in Spiva’s Main Gallery will provide inspiration for grade school youngsters taking the Tell Me a Storyclass taught by Anne-Marie Gailey and Sam Lewis. Using pictures, shapes, and colors, students will draw, paint, and collage a fun visual narrative modeled after the contemporary work of artist Faith Ringgold. Tell Me a Story will be held on Saturday, November 12 and 19. The morning session, 9:30–noon, is for children Grades 2–5; the afternoon session, 1–3:30 p.m., for Grades 4–7. Tuition is $30 for Spiva members; $35 for non-members. All supplies are included.
“Tis the season” to make wonderful holiday greeting cards nice enough to frame as gifts in the Berries, Bows, & Mistletoe Handmade Holiday Greeting Card class, scheduled 1–4 p.m., Saturday, November 12 and 19. No drawing experience is necessary to participate in this fun color pencil class using easy drawing techniques taught by Carol Adamec. Tuition, which includes supplies, is $45 for Spiva members and $50 for non-members. The class is appropriate for students ages 14 through adult, with a class limit of 15.
Instructor Andrew Super will help you rediscover Joplin with his Holiday Lights – Have Camera, Will Travel class on Wednesdays, November 30 and December 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m. See the holiday sites and lights in Joplin, places you've never been and places you've forgotten. Let the “eyes” of photography help you welcome in the season! Students will travel to various locations to photograph. This is a fun way to gain a more thorough knowledge of your camera, photography, and Joplin! Tuition for high school freshmen through adult students is $35 for Spiva members and $40 for non-members. Bring a 35mm SLR camera with film or memory card. Class is limited to 20.
