George A. Spiva Center for the Arts has issued a call for entries for PhotoSpiva 2006, a national photography competition open to any photographer in the United States or its territories.

“PhotoSpiva has the distinction of being the oldest continuous photographic competition in the United States,” noted Spiva Director Jo Mueller.

Open to amateurs and professionals, PhotoSpiva draws entries from around the nation. $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded, and any photographic process is eligible. Deadline for entries is February 13, 2006, with the exhibit on display from April 21 through May 26.

“Each year a nationally-recognized juror selects the work for exhibit, determines award winners, and presents a lecture,” Mueller said. "This year’s juror is Keith Carter, an internationally recognized artist and distinguished teacher."

Carter is known for his haunting, enigmatic photographs that have been exhibited in over eighty solo shows in 13 countries and published in eight books, including a mid-career survey, Keith Carter Photographs/Twenty-Five Years. His work is found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Getty Museum, and several others, along with numerous private and public collections. Carter is an award winning faculty member at Lamar University and holds the Endowed Walles Chair of Art. The recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey Grants and the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Keith Carter has appeared on national television's CBS Sunday Morning.

He will be presenting a talk and slide show about the development and methods of his work Sunday, March 12, 2006 at 2pm. Reservations are requested.
