Spiva invites public to attend slide lecture by internationally known photographer
"Avra" by John Paul Caponigro
The public is invited to attend a free slide show talk by internationally known photographer John Paul Caponigro at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11. The lecture will be presented in the Cornell Auditorium in the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

Caponigro, a renowned artist with a background in traditional painting and alternative photographic processes, creates images with a nature theme using digital media. An authority on creativity and fine digital printing, Caponigro teaches both privately in his studio and at select public venues. He is contributing editor for Camera Arts and View Camera, and a columnist for PhotoTechniques and Digital Photo Pro. His book, Adobe Photoshop Master Class (Adobe Press, 2003) is now in its second edition.

For his many artistic contributions, Caponigro was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2006. He is one of Canon’s “Explorers of Light” and an Epson Stylus Pro. His clients include Adobe, Apple, Canon, Colorbyte, Epson, GretagMacbeth, Kodak, and Sony. Exhibited internationally, his work resides in numerous private and public collections, including Princeton University, the Estée Lauder collection, and the Smithsonian.

Caponigro will be in Joplin to jury the entries and award winners for PhotoSpiva 2007, the annual national photography competition and exhibition that opens April 28 at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. The exhibition and competition are supported by sponsors David and Debra Humphreys with additional contributions from the Freeman R. Johnson Trust and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Caponigro’s appearance at MSSU is sponsored by Canon USA.

Along with the presentation of his images, Caponigro will share his thoughts about contemporary photography at a time when the medium is undergoing extraordinary changes. His social concerns include not only environmental issues, but the uses, abuses, and influences of visual media. While answering questions from the audience, Caponigro will display an alternate body of work entitled Wastelands.

The lecture at MSSU is free but reservations are requested by contacting Spiva Center for the Arts, 417.623.0183 or via email:
