Mbira players at Spiva! Join us!
From Spiva reports
1/22/08
Sunday, January 27, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
In the Main Gallery… Mbirathon, Live Music!
Mbira players at locations around the world join to keep traditional Shona mbira music played continuously for 24 hours. Mbira is used in Shona culture (Zimbabwe) for healing, and for communication with ancestors, including those who are the common ancestors of all human beings alive on earth today. The vibration of mbira music is itself healing, whether or not you believe in communication with ancestors. Visit Spiva on Sunday and enjoy this unique tradition in a novel setting—amidst the sculpture on display in Private Eyes/Public Views, the Center’s latest Main Gallery exhibit.
PhotoSpiva 2008 has officially been launched! In a departure from tradition, participating artists will enter online at www.photospiva.org
beginning January 30. Deadline for entries is midnight CST February 15.
Although the entry process is digital, all photographic processes/mediums are eligible, and awards will be determined from actual work once the exhibit is up. The move to digital entry has been under consideration for some time and is seen as a way to open the competition to more artists across the country.
Entering the competition in 2008 will put your images in front of influential photographic expert, Juror Rod Slemmons, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College, Chicago.
Mr. Slemmons will be in Joplin for the Juror’s Lecture, Awards presentation and Opening Reception for PhotoSpiva 2008 in April.
