Joplin native James Alexander Bliedung graduated from Joplin High School in 1926. While at Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania, Bliedung changed his name to John Beal. He starred in numerous Broadway productions and motion pictures. Beal won the first Emmy award given for best actor. He was also an accomplished painter.
