Eastmoreland Plaza was Joplin1s first large shopping center to be located somewhere other than downtown. As residents moved out further from the city core and the mass-produced affordable automobile became available, suburb shopping centers followed. Previously located at 622 Main, Sears, Roebuck and Company, the first to break away from the downtown commercial district, built its new store in Eastmoreland Plaza in 1956.
