Miners Park/Joe Becker Stadium
(1916; Local Historical Trail marker on the site)
(Third
and High Street)
For decades,
Miners Park was home to the Joplin Miners minor league professional
baseball team, which was affiliated with the New York Yankees.
Mickey Mantle, the most famous Miner, played shortstop for
the 1950 team. Dorrell (Whitey) Herzog, Stan Musial, Joe
Garagiola, Ken Boyer and Ralph Terry are just a few of the
baseball stars who played minor league baseball at Miners
Park. The name was changed to Joe Becker Stadium in 1956.
Becker, the business manager for the Joplin Miners, was
instrumental in rebuilding the grandstand after it burned
in 1936.
