In 1921, 144 citizens and businesses donated the necessary funds for the layout and construction of a nine-hole grass green golf course. In 1924, the course was expanded to eighteen holes. Schifferdecker is the home of one of the oldest golf tournaments west of the Mississippi, the Ozark Amateur, begun in 1922. A limestone clubhouse was completed in 1930 at a cost of $20,000.
