Austin Allen designed the five-story, Chicago-style department store for Joseph Newman at the southwest corner of Sixth and Main. Within five years, the Newman Mercantile Company employed 200 salespeople, had an annual payroll of $75,000, and sales of over one million dollars. The Newman Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
