43. Carnegie Library
(1903)
(828 Wall)

In 1901 the Joplin library board applied for funding from Andrew Carnegie, who awarded the City $40,000. At the general election of 1901, Joplin residents approved an annual tax of ten cents on every one hundred dollars for the maintenance of a free public library. The Neoclassical-style library was built using local materials--Carthage limestone and zinc shingles. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
