47. Joplin Creek
(Murphy Boulevard, in Landreth Park)

The creek was named to honor Reverend Harris G. Joplin, an itinerant Methodist minister who settled in the area beside a spring. That spring became known as “Joplin Spring,” and the creek into which the spring emptied was called “Joplin Creek.” As ore mining increased along Joplin Creek, the mines became known as the “Joplin Creek Mines.”
