For well over a half century, hundreds of thousands of people shopped in downtown Joplin. Three of the most popular department stores were Ramsay's, Christman's/Macy's, and Newman's. Ramsay1s Dry Goods Company opened for business on Thursday night, September 28, 1911. A crowd of more than 6,000 enthusiastic shoppers attended the grand opening and checked out the newly completed three-story department store.
