53. Federal Building
(1904)
(302 Joplin)

The original three-story, rectangular Federal Building and Courthouse was completed in 1904. It contained the post office on the first floor and part of the basement, the Federal courtroom and associated offices on the second floor and the Federal Marshal1s and other offices on the third floor. The exterior design of the building combines Federal and Renaissance Revival styles typical of the centralized designs used by the Department of the Treasury during that period. Its size doubled in 1936 with completion of a three-story addition.
