In 1888 Elias Zollenger Wallower purchased the southeast corner of 4th and Main for $16,000--the highest price ever paid for city property at that time. Wallower spent another $100,000 to build the Romanesque style office building which was later converted into a hotel. The first elevator in Joplin was located in the Keystone.
