8. First major lead strike
(1870; Local Historical Trail marker on the site)

(near the Vernon Sigars viaduct)

In August 1870, two miners, Elliot Raines Moffet and John B. Sergeant, leased a ten-acre tract near Joplin Creek from John C. Cox. They sank a discovery shaft that reportedly produced $60,000 worth of lead. More importantly, this strike became a defining moment in Joplin history, sparking the mining boom that would continue for 75 years.
