Make an elephant jar for your animal crackers, or a school of fish for a mobile! Maybe puppies or kittens are your thing, or dragons. Your bring your ideas, and I will help you create them!

“Creature Creations- Sewing”

Come learn how to create soft sewn sculpture using simple sewing and decorative techniques such as making a pattern, using buttons and embroidery, and create your own stuffed animal or monster friend! Class size limited to 8

Explore contemporary art with artist Elizabeth Murray and her famously colorful “Shape Paintings.” Get into groups and make your very own giant and bright puzzle-pieces to create Shape paintings!!

Discover amazing, strange, beautiful and unique dragonflies, butterflies, beetles, wasps, praying mantis, wasps, spiders too!! Drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and insect vessels. Explore exciting artworks from ancient cultures, from da Vinci to the famous French sculptor Louise Bourgeois. Art/science centers: actual robotic insects, large 3-D insect puzzles!!

“Batik T-shirts”

Design your own shirt, using a batik process. Students will paint the lines of their designs on a 100% cotton shirt with a resist, then using dye, fill in the colored areas and create their own wearable artwork. (Shirt size to be submitted with
reservation for this class—no cancellations, please.) Class size limited to 8.

“Memory Boxes”

Learn about shadow box artist Joseph Cornell, and then make your own memory box! We will use paint, decoupage paper clippings, and drawings, to create a memory box. Bring small trinkets from home that you would like to add to your work of art!

Design and create a large theater poster of James and the Giant Peach, Thunder Dragon, Jumanji, Lon Po Po, Beasts of India, or your own favorite story! Create sculptures of your favorite characters! Explore unique books and learn about the artists/authors. Great for Young Authors preparation!

“Pottery 101”

Basics in pottery, to instruct basic wheel throwing techniques and skills. Class to be offered as a day class twice today, once at 10:00- 12:00 and again, 1:00- 3:00. Small classes.

“SPLAT, DRIP, DABBLE!!”

Come ready to explore famous Abstract Expressionist and paint “splatterer” Jackson Pollock, his work, and technique, getting familiar with that art period of the 40’s and 50’s, and slinging paint around! Get ready for your “close up” in an art/film documentary while having fun with paint! Class to be offered as a day class twice today, once at 10:00- 12:00 and again, 1:00- 3:00.

“Action Figures in Motion!”

Running, dancing, singing--- look how a figure moves and create the pose you want! Students will make a small wire armature for their action figures, building up the designs with plaster gauze, to create tiny sculptures!
This is a full day class.

Monday August 4th

“Surrealism and Perspective”

Create your own surrealistic landscape after studying the works of Salvidor Dali, Max Ernst, Giorgio do Chirico, and Rene’ Magritte. Perspective fundamentals will be taught.

“Calder and the Sensational Circus!”

Learn about the great artist Alexander Calder, and his many sculptures and mobiles! Create fantastical circus or zoo animals using cardboard, poster board, paint, wallpaper, colored pencils, string, yarn, and wire.
Imaging a purple spotted leopard, a turquoise hippo or a tiny tight-rope walker! Students will learn about Calder’s New York circus illustrations and explore his Whitney Museum circus exhibit, and then form sketches of their very own circus or zoo, creating an entire miniature circus in operation!

“Comics and Graphic Novels”

Explore this world viewing and discussing various artists in this field, and creating your own short comic story utilizing basic drawing techniques.

“Magical Magritte”

View exciting surreal paintings and photographs created by Belgian artist Rene’ Magritte. Envision tiny people with umbrellas or fruit floating in the air. Working within the mediums of sculpture, drawing, and painting, each student will design a magical paper birdcage and a surreal paper mask. The possibilities are endless!

Wednesday August 6th

“Tropical Rain Forest Mobiles”

Using “Model Magic”, students will create their own fish, birds and butterflies to make their mobile!

“Cartoon Character Design”

Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing the figure and the art of facial expression to create, from their imaginations, their own cartoon and comic figure drawings!

“Painting Ukranian Eggs”

Students will create their own designs after studying other patterns and eggs done by expert egg painters of this old art, and then paint their own ceramic egg using the design they choose!

“Manga Day! Japanese Comics”

Explore the history of Manga, Japanese Comics, and learn the techniques to create this popular art form. Then create your own comic!

“Manga Mania!”

Comic books often inspire artists, and students will learn about Roy Lichtenstein and Takashi Murakami, artists from the past and present that use very different comic-book styles in their art. Students will paint their own Japanese comic book style paintings, their manga masterpieces!

“Oriental Lanterns and Origami”

Come and travel to the orient, learning about the ancient styles of Chinese Lantern Making and Japanese Origami, the art of paper folding. Learn about the artists of Asia who practiced these crafts by making your own lantern and folding crane, and then enjoy mango ice cream and fortune cookies!

Friday August 8th

“MY FACE! Clay Masks”

Make your own mask of clay, learning about the dividing of the face into halves and various expressions of faces, after a demonstration is given of sculptural methods and techniques. Add a hair-do or a hat to finish!

“Collage Book”

Learn to blend your own text and collage to create your own striking and colorful collage/journal. Students will learn about layering and working with various media, using type as a graphic element. Bring your ideas for this class!!

Saturday August 9th

“Colorful Mosaics!”

Students will learn the history, from ancient Roman times to the present, how people have used stone and tile mosaic for communication and decoration. Each will design, glue, position, and grout their own tile mosaic, using their own broken ceramic pieces brought if desired to incorporate into their art piece.

“Wearable Warhol!”

Students will learn about the artist Andy Warhol, who took everyday items, like the Campbell’s soup can, and made them extraordinary! Students should bring an UN-opened package of their favorite candy to inspire them to create a pop-art T-shirt design of their own, and then they will make their own wearable piece of pop-art! (Shirt size to be submitted with reservation for this class; no cancellations, please.) Class size limited to 8.
